THE ONE BEST CONTEMPORARY "GREAT AMERICAN NOVEL"

Updated: Mar 8, 2021

Installment #16 in Monolisticle's Ongoing Campaign Against the "Internet of Endless Listicles."

Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk book

Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk is more than a story about the Iraq War. It’s a literary time capsule that captures our entire contemporary American culture.

And it will hook you from page one.

Brilliantly set against the backdrop of a Dallas Cowboys football game, this satirical novel follows a platoon of hero war vets who have been flown in to be celebrated during halftime. This quintessentially American scenario gives author Ben Fountain the perfect platform by which to poke, prod, and amplify social commentary in all its forms.

This book has everything: Beyoncé. The NFL (with America’s team, no less). It has war (in flashback). Wealth. Hollywood. Cheerleaders. Exploitation in all its manifestations. It even has a love story (okay, maybe “love” is the wrong word) involving the main character and one of the aforementioned cheerleaders.

Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk was a finalist for the National Book Award. Of course it was. Was there ever any question? Because as far as great American novels go, this is one of the greatest.
