THE ONE BEST CROSS-GENERATIONAL ROCK PERFORMANCE POSSIBLY EVER

Updated: Mar 8, 2021

Installment #34 in Monolisticle's Ongoing Campaign Against the "Internet of Endless Listicles."

ELISE TROUW PLAYING DRUMS

Wow.

Just wow.

This video is one of the best things I’ve seen/heard/felt in a while. That's right, felt. Turn it up all the way. This is no time to pamper your speakers.

First, you've got the multi-talented young artist Elise Trouw singing and drumming the hell out of Metallica’s Enter Sandman. All while this intense rocker-looking guy (actor Paul Raci) hand-signs the lyrics like you've never seen anything signed in your life.

And if that weren't already one of the most engaging juxtapositions ever in the history of musical performance, let's throw in rocker Travis Barker, also playing drums (masterfully, as usual).

Oh, and while we're at it, how about we go ahead and toss in yet a third gifted drummer, Carey Watkins. Because why not?

Of course, if any heavy metal song was worthy of three drummers, it's Enter Sandman. This is the kind of song that drum sets were invented for.

Big nod to the director, cinematographer, and editor as well. Superbly done. Great pacing and dynamic build. So many cool details (like the shot at the beginning of Elise pounding the bass drum barefoot. Such a cool reveal).

The piece is hard to classify. It’s like a music video. But it’s not promoting an album. It's actually promoting a movie called Sound of Metal (on Amazon), starring Raci (the guy who's signing). But technically, it’s not a movie trailer, either. You know what? It doesn’t matter. Just watch it. It’s sensational.
