Installment #44 in Monolisticle's Ongoing Campaign Against the "Internet of Endless Listicles."
I’ll admit it. I didn’t appreciate the music of The Notorious B.I.G. until I watched the film “Biggie: I Got A Story To Tell.”
Prior to that, I could certainly appreciate the flow of his music, and I could appreciate the rhythm of it, and I could appreciate how it made me feel. But to fully appreciate the power and depth of his raw lyrical memoirs, you have to understand the obstacles that he's struggling against, the world of social injustice he's rebelling against, and the almost futility of the dreams he's trying to make come true.
No, I don’t know that world. And I won’t pretend to know that world. But this film brought me close enough to that world to make me begin to love Biggie’s music.
The film is filled with interesting, and even shocking, revelations about Biggie's life—his considerable talents, and his surprising interests and influences. And even though we know how his story ends, the filmmakers do a great job of keeping us gripped to the very end.
Which comes way too soon, on many levels.
